Various Artists – Dub Gone Crazy: The Evolution of Dub at King Tubby’s (1995)

•November 17, 2011 • Leave a Comment

I’ve been listening to a whole lot of dub lately , and I haven’t updated in forever so I’m taking matters into my own hands so bear with me.
Dub music is quintessentially Jamaican, though the impact of the music was felt world-wide. During the 1960s and 1970s, mobile sound-systems were the primary places music was heard.”King Tubby’s Hometown Hi Fi” was one of these sound-systems.
Bobby Vicious: “Nothing compared to Tubby’s. Tubby’s was the legend, you know. And I”ve seen a lot of sound systems, man. Even today, with all the technology we have today, you still don’t hear any sound system like Tubby’s. They’re big, and they’re huge, and they’re heavy, but nothin’ compares to that sound Tubby had”

“The sound system context in turn influenced King Tubby’s studio work: after witnessing the crowd’s response in the dancehall, he would then elaborate upon these effects in the laboratory setting of his studio, and eventually use them to craft records”, says Michael Veal in his vital book “Dub”.
One thing that led to the success of his sound system was the pressing of special records–dub plates–that were popular reggae and ska singles, stripped down of vocals and spaced out with delay and reverb. These were used for MCs to toast over, talkin’ shit about other sound systems, and getting the crowd hyped up and dancing. These dub-versions gave each sound system a unique sound, and Tubby’s was know far and wide for being the best.
This album is a compilation of tracks made for and by King Tubby. Including a lot of work by his protégés Scientist, Philip Smart, and Prince Jammy, this is a great introduction to one of my favorite styles of music.
If people seem to be particularly into this one, I’ve got a ton of good Jamaican dub I’d love to throw up here.

New Radiohead album available this Saturday

•February 14, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Usually the day after the Grammys is devoid of any music news that doesn’t relate to the previous night’s show. But as we well know, Radiohead doesn’t adhere to any normal set of rules. Just like *that*, the band’s new album, “The King of Limbs” will be available on Saturday. This Saturday. It will be the beloved band’s first album since 2007′s “In Rainbows,” which was their first that was announced and self-released in very short order. It’s unheard of, especially for a band this large to announce something so grand in such a short amount of time. Let’s just say we’re all very grateful !

It is available for digital pre-order right now and is also available in something called the band is calling newspaper format — two clear 10″ vinyl records, a CD and “many large sheets of artwork, 625 tiny pieces of artwork and a full-colour piece of oxo-degradeable plastic to hold it all together.”

OK then. Arcade who?

Pre-sale and release information is available at their website:

Manufacturing Consent – Noam Chomsky 1988

•January 16, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Using the propaganda model, Manufacturing Consent posits that corporate – owned news mass communication media — print, radio, television — are businesses subject to commercial competition for advertising revenue and profit. As such, their distortion (editorial bias) of news reportage — i.e. what types of news, which items, and how they are reported — is a consequence of the profit motive that requires establishing a stable, profitable business; therefore, news businesses favoring profit over the public interest succeed, while those favoring reportorial accuracy over profits fail, and are relegated to the margins of their markets (low sales and ratings).

Daft Punk’s first American Show – Wisconsin 1996.

Daft Punk @ Even Further, Wisconsin, USA May 26, 1996

“Let me tell you about the first time I saw Daft Punk, and while it wasn’t at my house, it was pretty damn close. My first introduction to Rave culture was in my hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dave Prince best describes what was happening in Milwaukee in his 1994 Request article “Milwaukee’s Rave New World”. Ask your friends about Milwaukee and instinctively they’ll offer one word: beer. And while you can often smell the hops from one of the city’s many breweries while wandering the small but clean downtown, a true underground spirit exists just below the surface of this industrial working-class town. Unbeknownst even to most people who live within the county limits, Milwaukee is home to America’s hardest and perhaps strongest rave scene. Incorporating elements from the city’s residual punk-rock scene with heavy-metal sensibilities and a comfort with house music it has absorbed from neighboring Chicago, Milwaukee’s rave community has withstood the mainstream media indifference, police harassment, and quickly changing musical tastes that have stalled the movement throughout the rest of North America. The Milwaukee scene is an amalgam of hippie sensibilities (“peace, love, unity and respect”), punk spirit (“do it yourself”), and heavy-metal attitude (“f—king hardcore”)”. Full Article

The event was called “Even Further”, produced by Drop Bass Network and Crew, and it took place Memorial Day Weekend, Friday May 24 – 27, in Eagle Cave, Wisconsin. Daft played in the wee morning hours on Sat May 26.

New York Times writer, Neil Strauss reported – “It rained every day; nonetheless, ravers danced in muddy tents to their favorite DJs (Frankie Bones, ESP Woody McBride, Scott Hardkiss, Apollo, Mixmaster Morris), marveled at how well electronics whizzes like Daft Punk and Laura Grabb could perform the music on live instruments and discovered that rock bands like Low and Poi Dog Pondering could also fit into a rave.” Full article.

Awesome to hear Wisconsin had one of the greatest DJ Duo’s around play back in the day, too bad I was only 9 when this happened,  though I was there in mind & spirit !

His infamous “Royal Albert Hall” show (actually recorded at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall) features 2 full sets, 1 acoustic and 1 plugged in.  Superior performances – better than the studio versions i think, especially the very nasty electric stuff, probably one of his best Live Albums of all time.

After 3 smashing EPs on Boysnoize Records, remixes for Chromeo, The Faint and The Teenagers and live gigs with Soulwax, Trevor Jackson, A-Trak, Ivan Smagghe and the Ed Banger Crew, Shadow Dancer finally present their long awaited debut album. “Golden Traxe” is a culmination of the UK duo´s electronica, cut-up techno, acid house and space disco sounds. Already loved and greatly supported by a range of classy producers such as erol Alkan, Mr. Oizo, Modeselektor and Soulwax, this album takes the UK duo to the next level.

Shadow Dancer began in the summer of 2006 almost by accident.
Brothers Paul and Alan Farrier had been writing music since childhood drawn by their love of artists such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, Human League and Pet Shop Boys to follow synthesizers rather than guitars. Although the pop and video game music of the ’80s was their initial inspiration, it was the sounds coming out of Detroit (Underground Resistance, Axis, Planet E), Chicago (Trax, Relief) and the European techno scene (Warp, Ideal, Tresor, Basic Channel, R&S, Harthouse) that started an obsession with electronic dance music.
